Toronto City Council has approved an ambitious strategy to reduce Toronto's community-wide greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions to zero by 2040 – 10 years earlier than originally proposed. The City's 2040 goal is one of the most ambitious in North America.

The community-wide goals for 2030 outlined in this strategy are:
• Reduce community-wide greenhouse gas emissions by 65% by 2030 from 1990 levels
• 100% of new buildings are designed and built to be virtually greenhouse-free
• Greenhouse gas emissions from existing buildings are halved from 2008 levels
• 50 percent of community-wide energy comes from renewable or low-carbon sources
• 25% of commercial and industrial floor space connected to low-carbon thermal energy sources
• 75 percent of school/work trips under 5 km are on foot, by bike or by public transport
• 30 percent of registered vehicles in Toronto are electric vehicles
• Identify pathways to more sustainable consumption in the City of Toronto's operations and in Toronto's economy
• 70% of household waste segregation from the City of Toronto's Integrated Waste Management System.
